VEGA Quick Links: Airport Hardware / LIR Fiberglass Mast / FAM Aluminum Mast / Specialty Products / Resources
The Frangible Aluminum Masts (FAM) were originally developed and tested in Sweden in the 1950's. Under a licensing agreement with SBCA, Jaquith brought the FAM to the USA and received FAA approval for its use in 1973. The FAA began deploying FAM structures to support Medium Approach Lighting Systems (MALSR) across the USA. Today, 35 years later, FAM masts are still supporting many MALSR systems around the world.

Tested & Proven Quality

The F.A.M. has been tested by the FAA and is the only approach mast of its kind which is approved both under FAA-E-2604 / FAA AC150/5345-45 and by the U.S. Military USAF 8814. The F.A.M Mast is durable, designed to withstand 100 mph winds, yet collapses when struck. After accidental impact, the collapsing tower ensures a safe landing with minimal damage to the aircraft.

Superior Manufacturing

The F.A.M. is constructed of lightweight anodized aluminum alloy sections. The truss configuration provides strength and rigidity. Sections are joined together by specially designed stainless steel friction clips with a 1" slope to accommodate the slope of legs, allowing for instant collapse if struck

Easy Assembly

Mast assembly instructions are exceptionally easy to follow, requiring only standard tools. A flat, level surface the length of the mast, is also required. Labor time to assemble a F.A.M. varies with the height, but the average time to assemble a 20' mast should be 3-4 man-hours.

Optional Accessories

Patented Light Sight Aiming Device Flasher Shield
Crossbars for ALS & MALS,
Calvert Non-marring strap wrench Adjustable Base Support
Tap/Guide & Anchor Bolts

Easy Maintenance

The materials used in the construction of the F.A.M. mast practically eliminate the possibility of corrosion. Furthermore, the patented steel base pivots to allow the mast to be lowered by one man for service. Secondary wiring is drawn up within the legs, away from environmental extremes.
